MICROMV (2001): Matchbox-sized cassette. Sony was the only electronics manufacturer for this format, and editing software was proprietary to Sony and only available on Microsoft Windows; however, open source programmers did manage to create capture software for Linux.
Another problem with cameras is that they tend to have issues with focusing while recording: they can only do it slowly. Unless you do what the pros do and pre-focus manually, you are going to get blurry video while the camera see-saws back and forth to lock on focus and struggles to catch up. Video cameras include dedicated focus sensors that work continuously, quickly shifting the focus to adapt as you move the camcorder around.
That’s weird. I’ve got a pair of 770s. I bought one last year and another this year. So any firmware upgrades can be compared directly. I’ve got the Rode VideoMic Pro (set the mic to +20dB & the cam audio volume to -30dB) and a Shure PG58 dynamic cardioid (set the cam audio to -6dB) when I don’t use a in-line mixer. I use Adobe and for quicky stuff MS moviemaker, but the sound always comes in at normal levels with both mics. Maybe your input jack is fried. I had the latter issue with my Canon 5DII.

Memory: Some camcorders record to SD cards while others have an internal flash memory. With SD cards, you can carry extra so that you never run out of memory. On the other hand, internal memory means you do not have to worry about keeping track of SD cards.

Even though consumer DSLRs have built-in flashes as a rule, many photographers opt to use a more powerful external flash. These flashes emit more light and can often be repositioned so that you can use reflected light to illuminate a subject. Bouncing flash off of a ceiling to brighten a room is possible with a dedicated flash unit, but not with the ubiquitous DSLR pop-up flash. Depending on your needs for power, recycle time, and movement, a dedicated flash can cost anywhere from $150 to $500.
To get around this, digital cameras, computers, and other digital gadgets use a technique called compression. Compression is a mathematical trick that involves squeezing digital photos so they can be stored with fewer numbers and less memory. One popular form of compression is called JPG (pronounced J-PEG, which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, after the scientists and mathematicians who thought up the idea). JPG is known as a “lossy” compression because, when photographs are squeezed this way, some information is lost and can never be restored. High-resolution JPGs use lots of memory space and look very clear; low resolution JPGs use much less space and look more blurred. Box cameras were introduced as a budget level camera and had few if any controls. The original box Brownie models had a small reflex viewfinder mounted on the top of the camera and had no aperture or focusing controls and just a simple shutter. Later models such as the Brownie 127 had larger direct view optical viewfinders together with a curved film path to reduce the impact of deficiencies in the lens.
Heyfield72, I didn’t notice a big issue there myself. There was a little zoom and a very quiet IS noise (almost like a rattling can in the next room), but they were drowned out by most noises. Most camcorders pick up some-self noise, and it is often exacerbated by the auto gain control, which boosts the microphone in the lack of external noise, which may make it more comfortable. A simple external zoom microphone would deal with both.
hi l have a panasonic HDC-SD80 at moment which ive loved but is now playing up. I mainly record my sons. one plays football while the other surfs, therefore l require something that is good with fast movements and long zoom at least 40 plus. I find that while the one l have did the job it failed to recognize my sons facial expressions while riding surf or playing footy which l would love to have with this new one, can you suggest which one would suit my needs best thanks, regards Julie
Of course, the autofocus system has to be able to keep up with the frame rate. Basic DSLRs often only have a few autofocus points, which makes it difficult to track moving subjects. High-end models sport autofocus points that cover most of the frame, making them favorites of photographers interested in capturing sports action and wildlife. Continuous shooting and autofocus performance go hand-in-hand, so it is important to look for a camera that does both well.
It’s hard for me to say for sure, but I think either our main pick, or the cheaper Canon, should do the job. What’s the current camera you’re using? That might give me some indication of where the problems are.
The Bayer filter pattern is a repeating 2×2 mosaic pattern of light filters, with green ones at opposite corners and red and blue in the other two positions. The high proportion of green takes advantage of properties of the human visual system, which determines brightness mostly from green and is far more sensitive to brightness than to hue or saturation. Sometimes a 4-color filter pattern is used, often involving two different hues of green. This provides potentially more accurate color, but requires a slightly more complicated interpolation process.
Hi, Could you please recommend a camcorder to record gymnastics competitions? I normally “tape” my son from the bleachers using my NIkon D3100 camera and a tripod. Because the “target” is between 20 and 100 feet away depending on the location of the different events (rings, floor, pommel horse, p-bars & vault) I need to keep switching between my standard lens and a 70-300 mm. The quality I am getting is decent, but I think a camcorder should give me better results.

With the larger sensor comes a shorter zoom. For the most part you’ll see models with short 2.9x (24-70mm) reach, or the slightly longer 4x lens (25-100mm). These lenses tend to capture a good amount of light throughout their range and the optics required to do that necessitate a large front element and short zoom range.
The frames are later played back in a ciné projector at a specific speed, called the “frame rate” (number of frames per second). While viewing, a person’s eyes and brain merge the separate pictures to create the illusion of motion. The first ciné camera was built around 1888 and by 1890 several types were being manufactured. We’re in the process of updating the piece to reflect the fact that the V750 has now been replaced by the V770, even though they’re all but indistinguishable. Suffice to say, if it has buttons on it, I’ve probably reviewed it at some point over the last 20-odd years. Remember that you are investing in a system. When it comes to picking your first DSLR it’s important to remember that you aren’t buying just a camera — you are investing in an entire line of bodies, lenses, and accessories. If you know that you want to take a certain type of photo be sure that the body you pick supports the types of lens you want to purchase.
