I think that is a very suitable option. The only drawback is that it doesn’t have a port for an external microphone. It does have a built-in stereo mic, though. So you’ll need to be mindful when recording that your environment is very quiet, because in-camera mics try to pick up everything. But it’s otherwise a great camera for your purposes. When picking out a lens, you will need to think about how close you want the lens to be to your face (or a model’s face). Buying a digital camera is a very different experience than it was a few years ago. Smartphone cameras keep getting better, so there are a lot fewer buyers out there for budget pocket shooters. And because of that, there aren’t that many good, inexpensive point-and-shoots. Meanwhile, entry-level SLRs have serious competition for your dollar from mirrorless rivals, and if you’ve got a bigger budget you can opt for premium pocket models with large image sensors, midrange interchangeable lens models, or bridge-style superzooms that bring distant subjects into close, clear view.
The Canon 5D Mark III is the venerable workhorse of the photography world and, while it lacks things like a flip screen or WiFi, it makes this list because it is just that good. This camera has a full frame sensor, a whopping 61 autofocus points, great performance at high ISOs, and excellent dynamic range. For example, f/8 at 8 ms (1/125 of a second) and f/5.6 at 4 ms (1/250 of a second) yield the same amount of light. The chosen combination affects the final result. The aperture and focal length of the lens determine the depth of field, which refers to the range of distances from the lens that will be in focus. A longer lens or a wider aperture will result in “shallow” depth of field (i.e., only a small plane of the image will be in sharp focus). This is often useful for isolating subjects from backgrounds as in individual portraits or macro photography.
Mirrorless cameras are the new kids on the block and they are becoming wildly popular with photographers and videographers due to their relatively lightweight, interchangeable lenses, versatility, and crystal-clear images. If you want a camera that comes with most of the bells and whistles of a heavy DSLR, but in a much smaller and lighter package, a mirrorless camera is perfect.
I went through this with my Canon R600 and my Zoom H2. It took a bit of real-time experimentation but it worked quite well in the end, and sounds so much better than the camcorder’s internal mic. The hassle is that you have to remember and reset the controls on the Zoom every time you turn it on as it doesn’t allow you to save your settings (at least that’s how it works with my H2). If you’re performing music in your videos for YouTube, you’re going to need to worry far more about sound quality than having a super beefy production camera. Fortunately, you can attach higher-quality sound to more average cameras and attain perfectly watchable and enjoyable videos for a fraction of the price of something like a C100. The most important quality of a camera for you will probably be if the camera can accept external microphones or not. If it can do that, plus shoot 1080p or higher video footage for a decent clip length (usually around 30 minutes – more than enough for a song or 2), then you’re very set. After that, any wide angle lens (if you’re performing in a small room) will suffice. Don’t spend tons of money – you won’t need to, at least not at this stage!

This isn’t something we directly looked at, so I can’t speak to with full certainty. I believe that you can monitor the output over HDMI while recording to SD card, but it won’t be a clean video feed out, it’ll probably show a duplicate of what’s on the touch screen of the Panasonic.
We’re starting to see longer zooms in this category, but with narrower aperture and lenses that top out at 10x coverage (25-250mm). A narrow aperture isn’t as good for low light as models with short zooms and big f-stops, but is a better choice for travel, when you want a pocket camera with an ample zoom range. The 1-inch sensor size typically nets solid image quality through ISO 3200, and even to ISO 6400 if you opt to shoot in Raw format, so use in dim light is still possible.
In 2010, after the success of James Cameron’s 2009 3D film Avatar, full 1080p HD 3D camcorders entered the market. With the proliferation of file-based digital formats, the relationship between recording media and recording format has declined; video can be recorded onto different media. With tapeless formats, recording media are storage for digital files.
Other digital consumer camcorders record in DV or HDV format on tape, transferring content over FireWire or USB 2.0 to a computer where large files (for DV, 1GB for 4 to 4.6 minutes in PAL/NTSC resolutions) can be edited, converted and recorded back to tape. The transfer is done in real time, so the transfer of a 60-minute tape requires one hour to transfer and about 13GB of disk space for the raw footage (plus space for rendered files and other media).
The third method is called scanning because the sensor moves across the focal plane much like the sensor of an image scanner. The linear or tri-linear sensors in scanning cameras utilize only a single line of photosensors, or three lines for the three colors. Scanning may be accomplished by moving the sensor (for example, when using color co-site sampling) or by rotating the whole camera. So, for that price point it’s going to be tough to get everything you want. Before you dive straight into cameras, if your 8 yo already has access to a computer then you might want to consider a new webcam instead. Webcams have come a long way in quality and variety and tend to be pretty affordable. But before you do that, you might want to make a list of things that are important: will they want a touchscreen LCD or is navigating a menu system fine for them? Do they need a tilting screen or a fully articulating screen for “selfie” mode? Is slow motion video mode something they want? Do they really want to record in 1080p or is 720p sufficient? Will they ever want to use an external microphone or is in-camera mic good enough? That’s a lot for an 8 yo, I know, but you might be surprised by the features they know they want. That will help you narrow it down, as some cameras have flip screens but only shoot 720p, etc. You’re always sacrificing something so finding out what’s actually important will help you choose.

My only concern is that I don’t see any AC power option. I want to be able to set this camera up for an event, hit Record and let it run for 3 hours or more while I perform on stage. Wal-Mart has this unit in a pretty complete kit including a 64gb memory card which will hold more than 3 hours of high-quality video. It doesn’t appear that the batteries can handle that. My old units always came with a charger/AC power supply. ???
You may want a combination of these camera types, in order to have all eventualities covered. For instance, your smartphone can be ideal for handling photo opportunities that come up on the spur of the moment. On the other hand, if you’re on a safari in Africa taking a photo of a lion, you’ll be better off utilizing the zoom on a DSLR camera than moving in close enough to line up the shot with your smartphone.
