We shot this low-light sample video in the transept of the Sanders Theatre in Harvard, which has very low lighting. The video cameras were set to their highest-quality settings, with low-light enhancement modes enabled.
The OM-D E-M10 Mark III is a great alternative to an entry-level DSLR. Some will criticise the smaller Micro Four Thirds sensor format (roughly half the area of APS-C) but the effect on image quality is minor and it means that the lenses are as compact and lightweight as the camera itself. Sporting a 5-axis image stabilization system, decent electronic viewfinder, an impressive 8.6fps burst shooting speed and 4K video, it’s no toy – the E-M10 Mark III is a properly powerful camera.
In photography, the single-lens reflex camera (SLR) is provided with a mirror to redirect light from the picture taking lens to the viewfinder prior to releasing the shutter for composing and focusing an image. When the shutter is released, the mirror swings up and away allowing the exposure of the photographic medium and instantly returns after the exposure. No SLR camera before 1954 had this feature, although the mirror on some early SLR cameras was entirely operated by the force exerted on the shutter release and only returned when the finger pressure was released. The Asahiflex II, released by Japanese company Asahi (Pentax) in 1954, was the world’s first SLR camera with an instant return mirror.
Thanks again, the 30 min. is the problem with a compact camera and I can’t take pics while filming. The only compact camera that does that is the Olympus MR25. Or, do you know about any compact camera that can film and shoot pics in high resolution with flash? (sorry for my bad English)

But lens options aren’t as vast as they are with the Canon and Nikon SLR systems. You have a much larger selection with a Canon or Nikon, including many excellent third-party options from Sigma and Tamron. SLR lens options like the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary aren’t matched by mirrorless in terms of value, and you also have access to exotic glass like the AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR ($16,299.95), the likes of which simply isn’t available in a mirrorless format at this time.

The V770K also includes a Wi-Fi interface, which allows it to connect to a cell phone or tablet as well as a standard Wi-Fi network. The free app for iOS and Android can remotely control the camera with a live preview. From here you can zoom in and out and stop/start recordings, but the more complex manual controls are not available. When connected to a Wi-Fi network, the V770K appears as a DLNA device, so any compatible computer (Windows or Mac) or device, like a Roku, can play back video from the memory card. Wi-Fi can’t be used to transfer the original recordings to a PC or Mac. It can, however, be used to livestream video to Ustream, a neat feature for things like family events that someone can’t get to.
There are also premium bridge models with larger 1-inch sensors and shorter zooms. They still have a considerable size advantage over SLRs with comparable zooms—just think about carryin an interchangebale lens camera and two or three lenses to cover a 24-200mm, 24-400mm, or 24-600mm coverage range. They tend to be more expensive than an SLR, and certainly more than bridge models with smaller sensors, but do better at higher ISO settings and sport lenses that gather more light. If you put a premium on a lightweight camera, and want the versatility that a long zoom design delivers, look at a bridge model with a 1-inch sensor. Just be prepared to pay a premium.

Nikon has taken its flagship D5 DSLR and most of its high-end features and distilled all of this into a smaller, but still very durable metal body. The full-frame sensor is replaced by an 20.9MP APS-C sized chip that allows the D500 to shoot at a rapid 10fps and deliver a great high ISO performance. A brilliant all-rounder with a brilliant 153-point AF system means it excels at fast action like sports and wildlife photography, but still has the chops to shoot landscapes and portraits. If the cost is a bit steep, then take a look at the D7500. It sits below the D500 and inherits many of its tech, including the 20.9MP sensor.

Unfortunately, we don’t have that available for sharing with our readers. Your best bet might be just to pick up the camcorder and try it for a few days, and then return it if it’s not compatible with how you want to shoot. Alternatively, if you can find a store near you that has it in stock, you might be able to convince them to let you record to your own memory card and take the footage home for editing.
Inexpensive pocket video cameras use flash memory cards, while some more expensive camcorders use solid-state drives or SSD; similar flash technology is used on semi-pro and high-end professional video cameras for ultrafast transfer of high-definition television (HDTV) content.
No on-camcorder microphone can do miracles, though, and if you want to upgrade, the Panasonic is the only one of the cameras we tested that offers both a microphone input and a place to put it—the Canon only had the former, and the Sony neither.
The crux of it is that with a DSLR camera the lens has a mirror and prysm system, which reflects the light captured through the lens into the viewfinder. So you’re seeing exactly the same framed image (within 5–10%) as the lens is capturing.
Professional medium format SLR (single-lens-reflex) cameras (typically using 120/220 roll film) use a hybrid solution, since such a large focal-plane shutter would be difficult to make and/or may run slowly. A manually inserted blade known as a dark slide allows the film to be covered when changing lenses or film backs. A blind inside the camera covers the film prior to and after the exposure (but is not designed to be able to give accurately controlled exposure times) and a leaf shutter that is normally open is installed in the lens. To take a picture, the leaf shutter closes, the blind opens, the leaf shutter opens then closes again, and finally the blind closes and the leaf shutter re-opens (the last step may only occur when the shutter is re-cocked).
Since many people now own a smartphone, the real question is whether you need a digital camera as well. It’s very hard to see an argument for point-and-shoot compacts anymore: for social-media snaps, most of us can get by with our phones. For this website, I take a lot of macro photos—close-ups of circuits and mechanical parts—with my Ixus that I couldn’t possibly capture with the LG, so I won’t be jumping ship anytime soon.
Step back a decade and there was no comparison at all between the rough and clunky snapshot cameras on cellphones and even the most mediocre compact digital cameras. While the digitals were boasting ever-increasing numbers of megapixels, cellphones took crude snaps little better than the ones you could get from a basic webcam (1 megapixel or less was common). Now all that’s changed. The Canon Ixus/Powershot digital camera I use routinely is rated at 7.1 megapixels, which is perfectly fine for almost anything I ever want to do. My new LG smartphone comes in at 13 megapixels, which (theoretically, at least) sounds like it must be twice as good.
