Within a decade of being introduced in America, 3 general forms of camera were in popular use: the American- or chamfered-box camera, the Robert’s-type camera or “Boston box”, and the Lewis-type camera. The American-box camera had beveled edges at the front and rear, and an opening in the rear where the formed image could be viewed on ground glass. The top of the camera had hinged doors for placing photographic plates. Inside there was one available slot for distant objects, and another slot in the back for close-ups. The lens was focused either by sliding or with a rack and pinion mechanism. The Robert’s-type cameras were similar to the American-box, except for having a knob-fronted worm gear on the front of the camera, which moved the back box for focusing. Many Robert’s-type cameras allowed focusing directly on the lens mount. The third popular daguerreotype camera in America was the Lewis-type, introduced in 1851, which utilized a bellows for focusing. The main body of the Lewis-type camera was mounted on the front box, but the rear section was slotted into the bed for easy sliding. Once focused, a set screw was tightened to hold the rear section in place. Having the bellows in the middle of the body facilitated making a second, in-camera copy of the original image.
There is a way to turn photos from an ordinary film camera into digital photos—by scanning them. A scanner is a piece of computer equipment that looks like a small photocopier but works like a digital camera. When you put your photos in a scanner, a light scans across them, turning them into strings of pixels and thus into digital images you can see on your computer.
Consumer Reports also gives the nearly identical model from last year, the V750K, high praise, citing its excellent image quality and low-light video. It comes sixth on their chart, but all of the models above it cost over a thousand dollars, which we consider to be prohibitively expensive. (If you want a camera that costs that much, you are probably not the target audience for this guide.) They do note that it is “larger and heavier than most in its class,” though.
Common values for field of view crop in DSLRs using active pixel sensors include 1.3x for some Canon (APS-H) sensors, 1.5x for Sony APS-C sensors used by Nikon, Pentax and Konica Minolta and for Fujifilm sensors, 1.6 (APS-C) for most Canon sensors, ~1.7x for Sigma’s Foveon sensors and 2x for Kodak and Panasonic 4/3-inch sensors currently used by Olympus and Panasonic. Crop factors for non-SLR consumer compact and bridge cameras are larger, frequently 4x or more.

If you’re willing to live without a viewfinder of any sort and use the LCD to frame shots, you can find solid mirrorless models for under $500, including a kit lens. Like SLRs, different manufacturers support different lens formats. If you buy a Sony mirrorless camera, you’ll stick with Sony E and FE lenses, and if you opt for Fujifilm you’re locked into the X lens system.
The EOS Rebel T7 (known as the EOS 2000D outside the US) is Canon’s cheap and cheerful entry-level DSLR. While not featuring quite the same impressive spec as pricier models up the Canon range, you still get a pretty solid set of features for the beginner including Wi-Fi and NFC technology built-in. This means you can transfer images to your smartphone for super-quick sharing. Images from the 24.1MP sensor are more and adequate, but not quite a match for those from the EOS Rebel T7i / EOS 800D. The 9-point autofocus system, as well as the Live View AF system is disappointing, while there’s no touchscreen either.

Some professional SLR could be provided with interchangeable finders for eye-level or waist-level focusing, focusing screens, eye-cup, data backs, motor-drives for film transportation or external battery packs.
Unfortunately, as for the video bitrate, I don’t really know enough to make a hard call. I’m betting 24 Mbps will be just fine and keep in mind that you can always convert it to a lower bitrate, but not the other way around. I believe (though I could be wrong) that the 35 Mbps is linked to shooting at 60p, where 24 Mbps is at 24p. 60p will have much smoother motion, but 24p is more “cinematic” and generally how we’re used to seeing movies and TV shot. So video shot at 60p sometimes looks a bit “off” if you’re not used to it.
The Canon M40 debuted at $700 when it came out in 2011. The Canon R600 debuted at $400 when it came out this year. They’re vastly different cameras, with the M40 representing a higher-end model in Canon’s lineup. For something similar that’s currently available, have a look at the Canon G20.

There are usually a couple of ways you can do it! Most cameras let you plug them directly into your computer using the USB port on both the camera and the computer. Otherwise, you simply remove the SD card, and put it into a card reader (either an external one, or the one built into the side of many MacBooks).
Focussing of these plate cameras was by the use of a ground glass screen at the point of focus. Because lens design only allowed rather small aperture lenses, the image on the ground glass screen was faint and most photographers had a dark cloth to cover their heads to allow focussing and composition to be carried out more easily. When focus and composition were satisfactory, the ground glass screen was removed and a sensitised plate put in its place protected by a dark slide. To make the exposure, the dark slide was carefully slid out and the shutter opened and then closed and the dark slide replaced.
While we performed our testing on last year’s V750K, the V770K is identical barring the smallest changes (like a new HDR mode, some wireless stuff, and a different HDMI port), and should provide an identical experience.
Short answer: you might. Two issues that might affect your results are the shutter speed of a video camera is generally in the 1/30 range — as you know too slow for birds in flight. The other is “scan lines” as video writes images on line at a time — interlacing. This can be combated somewhat by shooting progressive, I have found even that was difficult to generate decent stills. (Source: I was a newspaper photographer with the task of getting decent stills from the HD video we shot. Never did get them.)

At first, video cameras were large and expensive. Only professionals operated them. As the electronics industry advanced, and solid state circuits with transistors and microprocessors replaced vacuum tubes, video cameras became smaller and inexpensive. Now many mobile phones and other consumer electronic devices include video cameras. In addition, software is now widely available to edit or to compress the output from video cameras.
Professional medium format SLR (single-lens-reflex) cameras (typically using 120/220 roll film) use a hybrid solution, since such a large focal-plane shutter would be difficult to make and/or may run slowly. A manually inserted blade known as a dark slide allows the film to be covered when changing lenses or film backs. A blind inside the camera covers the film prior to and after the exposure (but is not designed to be able to give accurately controlled exposure times) and a leaf shutter that is normally open is installed in the lens. To take a picture, the leaf shutter closes, the blind opens, the leaf shutter opens then closes again, and finally the blind closes and the leaf shutter re-opens (the last step may only occur when the shutter is re-cocked).
A GoPro, on the other hand, is much tougher, smaller, and lighter. So you can strap it to yourself, jump out of an airplane or down a mountain or into the ocean, and not worry about it getting destroyed. So it’s more “set it and forget it” while you focus on not wiping out on a black diamond run.
Definitely will be looking at this model. However, a question for the mods here – if I wanted to go “next tier” with video, what should I be looking into? Something solid and versatile, an “all-around” camera that performs well at night and during other tricky conditions, shoots in at least 720×1080, has robust functionality, includes external mic hookup, can mount different lenses… I thought a lot of DSLRs do video too, but I didn’t see too much on your reviews about that, and it seems that the target market for those fancy $1k+ pieces of equipment are primarily professional photographers…

There’s Free AVCHD to MOV in the App Store. That’s my own personal recommendation (it has an almost perfect rating). However, you can change the settings to record in MP4 in the Panasonic camcorder. That might be the easiest way to bypass converting all together.
