A camera works with the light of the visible spectrum or with other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. A still camera is an optical device which creates a single image of an object or scene and records it on an electronic sensor or photographic film. All cameras use the same basic design: light enters an enclosed box through a converging lens/convex lens and an image is recorded on a light-sensitive medium(mainly a transition metal-halide). A shutter mechanism controls the length of time that light can enter the camera. Most photographic cameras have functions that allow a person to view the scene to be recorded, allow for a desired part of the scene to be in focus, and to control the exposure so that it is not too bright or too dim. A display, often a liquid crystal display (LCD), permits the user to view the scene to be recorded and settings such as ISO speed, exposure, and shutter speed.
The flip side of that is that a video camera is easier to use, can be used across more zoom lengths (like you mentioned), and will capture sound more accurately. Overall, I’d suggest the Panasonic V770 does sound like a good choice for you, due to its flexibility, plus the fact that it hits your price range well.

A video camera is camera used to make electronic motion pictures. It captures moving images and synchronous sound. Early video cameras were all analog and most modern ones are digital. Analog video cameras produce signals that can be displayed with analog televisions. The signals can be shown at the time, or can be stored in an analog format on magnetic tape. Digital video cameras produce digital images.
The $600 Panasonic HC-V770K has the best video, audio, and stabilization quality out of all the cameras available. We like its clear, bright video in low light, and the audio quality from the built-in microphone (as well as the ability to connect an external microphone). In situations where other camcorders capture grainy video, the V770K’s video is still clean and sharp.
Unfortunately, I don’t know enough about the X920 to comment off hand, but Reviewed.com has Reviewed both it at the Panasonic W850, which I believe has the same sensor as the V750/770, but with a few more bells and whistles (I might be wrong on that, these things get very confusing). So you can check out a bit of a comparison between the two by looking at the two reviews.
A dedicated device will have vastly better image quality than your phone, and the zoom lens will make it a lot easier to zoom in on what you actually want to record. But what really makes it better than your phone and worth carrying around is its form factor. Unlike a difficult-to-grip phone or a large DSLR, a video camera is actually designed for extended shooting from a variety of angles. If you’re planning on recording something for an extended period of time, like a sporting event or a vacation video—or anything at an odd angle that would otherwise require you to squat or stretch to see the screen, like a baby’s first steps—a video camera with a rotating screen, superior zoom capabilities, quick autofocus, and a high-quality microphone will be a godsend. More on this later.

Digital SLRs have may advantages compared to their film counter-parts. You get the digital workflow with instead previews and low usage costs. Taking thousands of images is easy with a digital. On the other hand, each roll of film costs money takes space and most be properly kept until developed (and after too).

A rangefinder is a device to measure subject distance, with the intent to adjust the focus of a camera’s objective lens accordingly (open-loop controller). The rangefinder and lens focusing mechanism may or may not be coupled. In common parlance, the term “rangefinder camera” is interpreted very narrowly to denote manual-focus cameras with a visually-read out optical rangefinder based on parallax. Most digital cameras achieve focus through analysis of the image captured by the objective lens and distance estimation, if it is provided at all, is only a byproduct of the focusing process (closed-loop controller).
At CES 2013, Sakar International announced the Polaroid iM1836, an 18 MP camera with 1″-sensor with interchangeable sensor-lens. An adapter for Micro Four Thirds, Nikon and K-mount lenses was planned to ship with the camera.
In CES (January) 2014, Sony announced the first consumer/low-end professional (“prosumer”) camcorder Sony FDR-AX100 with a 1″ 20.9MP sensor able to shoot 4K video in 3840×2160 pixels 30fps or 24fps in the XAVC-S format; in standard HD the camcorder can also deliver 60fps. When using the traditional format AVCHD, the camcorder supports 5.1 surround sound from its built-in microphone, this is however not supported in the XAVC-S format. The camera also has a 3-step ND filter switch for maintaining a shallow depth of field or a softer appearance to motion. For one hour video shooting in 4K the camera needs about 32 GB to accommodate a data transfer rate of 50 Mbit/s. The camera’s MSRP in the US is USD $2,000.
Nikon has taken its flagship D5 DSLR and most of its high-end features and distilled all of this into a smaller, but still very durable metal body. The full-frame sensor is replaced by an 20.9MP APS-C sized chip that allows the D500 to shoot at a rapid 10fps and deliver a great high ISO performance. A brilliant all-rounder with a brilliant 153-point AF system means it excels at fast action like sports and wildlife photography, but still has the chops to shoot landscapes and portraits. If the cost is a bit steep, then take a look at the D7500. It sits below the D500 and inherits many of its tech, including the 20.9MP sensor.
You may scratch your head when you see pocket cameras with fixed lenses selling for anywhere from $400 to $1,000. After all, you can get an interchangeable lens model for the same price. But these slim, premium shooters target a very specific market—photographers who already own a mirrorless camera or SLR and a bunch of lenses, but want something small as an alternative option.
That’s not great, but most of the camcorders in this price range have similar battery life. I asked CamcorderInfo.com’s Jeremy Stamas about the low-life battery trend in my email interviews for this piece, and here’s what he had to say:

Since many people now own a smartphone, the real question is whether you need a digital camera as well. It’s very hard to see an argument for point-and-shoot compacts anymore: for social-media snaps, most of us can get by with our phones. For this website, I take a lot of macro photos—close-ups of circuits and mechanical parts—with my Ixus that I couldn’t possibly capture with the LG, so I won’t be jumping ship anytime soon.
After some discussion, we focused on models that did not include built-in memory. Although built-in memory does have some advantages (it offer lots of capacity, and you can add even more with an SD card), it is more expensive than going without and just recording straight to SD card. We also removed models that had gimmicky extra features, like shooting in two directions at once.
Most modern smartphones only have a menu choice to start a camera application program and an on-screen button to activate the shutter. Some also have a separate camera button, for quickness and convenience. A few camera phones are designed to resemble separate low-end digital compact cameras in appearance and to some degree in features and picture quality, and are branded as both mobile phones and cameras.
For pro sports, you’ll see bigger cameras on the sidelines. They don’t pack as much resolution as SLRs used to cover weddings and events, but they fire off images at much higher burst rates—usually about 10fps with continuous tracking and exposure. Sony has an intriguing alternative out there in the mirrorless space, the a9. Lighter and less expensive than competing SLRs, it locks and fires at an incredible 20fps and records video in 4K.
Moving up to the $200 to $400 price nets more modern CMOS image sensors and very long zoom lenses—30x is the standard at this point. For the most part video is still 1080p, and you’ll also see some cameras with small electronic viewfinders, Raw shooting capability, and very quick autofocus. Pure image quality is better than a smartphone, with the real advantage being the zoom lens. There are also several models that are waterproof available in this price range.

Camcorders are used by nearly all electronic media, from electronic-news organizations to current-affairs TV productions. In remote locations, camcorders are useful for initial video acquisition; the video is subsequently transmitted electronically to a studio or production center for broadcast. Advances mean that image quality greatly favors digital cameras which now have over 14 stops of dynamic-range and reach stellar ISO sensitivities as high as 204,800. With resolutions reaching 36 MP too, they can capture a tremendous amount of details.
Unfortunately not in the immediate future—but that’s mostly because no one has put out anything really new to speak of since these. We do want to update the piece, but there’s just not much going on with consumer oriented video cameras these days outside of action cams.
Almost all SLR cameras use a front surfaced mirror in the optical path to direct the light from the lens via a viewing screen and pentaprism to the eyepiece. At the time of exposure the mirror is flipped up out of the light path before the shutter opens. Some early cameras experimented with other methods of providing through-the-lens viewing, including the use of a semi-transparent pellicle as in the Canon Pellix and others with a small periscope such as in the Corfield Periflex series.

Image sensor: This is the light-detecting microchip in a digital camera and it uses either CCD or CMOS technology. You can’t actually see the chip in this photo, because it’s directly underneath the lens. But you can see what it looks like in our article on webcams.
The 70D is doubtless a major step up from the T5i, especially with the overhauled AF system, as well as just generally being a more powerful camera. The T5i, however, is a bit easier to learn on. But if you’re willing to really spend a lot of time and effort on it, I’m sure the 70D would reward you in the long term—but it might feel extremely overwhelming for a new user. It’s a pretty serious piece of gear!

hi l have a panasonic HDC-SD80 at moment which ive loved but is now playing up. I mainly record my sons. one plays football while the other surfs, therefore l require something that is good with fast movements and long zoom at least 40 plus. I find that while the one l have did the job it failed to recognize my sons facial expressions while riding surf or playing footy which l would love to have with this new one, can you suggest which one would suit my needs best thanks, regards Julie
Canon announced the followup to its R600 with the unsurprisingly named R700 ($300, shipping in February). The R600 was essentially identical to the R500 that preceded it, and the R700 seems extremely similar, too. It appears to have the same design, sensor, and lens as its two predecessors, with the addition of a brighter LCD screen and a new UI. One notable improvement is that the video camera will come bundled with the higher capacity BP-727, which can give you up to an extra 55 minutes of recording time, and goes for $80 on its own. Canon also updated the R70 and R72 along similar lines from the R50/R60, and R52/R62, including built-in storage and connectivity as improvement over the base model.
