The choice between an optical or electronic viewfinder is another one to consider. Modern EVFs are really, really good, and refresh quickly enough so you can track moving action. If you haven’t used one in a few years, you’ll be surprised at how far they’ve come. But for some photographers there’s no substitute for an optical viewfinder, in which case an SLR will be preferred to mirrorless.
I’m going to upgrade my old ’07 Sony camcorder, and I think these Panasonics are the right choice. I’m just not sure which one to get: the 770 or the 850. Both are ” plus” – versions of the 750, and about the same price-category. Which one would you recommend?
Just wish the 770 had the audio issue fixed, hell my Gopro Silver has better audio than the 770 when imported into an editor. Nice well defined audio blips instead of the almost flat lined 770. However straight from the 770 camera played on a PC or TV via HDMI the audio is very good.
But here’s the thing—no camera that’s in this class is going to do a good job during a concert. It’s just not going to happen. The RX100 might do an okay job, but only if you’re incredibly close to the musicians. To do that sort of recording you want a high end videography rig, with a high speed lens. Lighting in concerts is notoriously difficult to deal with, so you’ll need to account for constantly shifting light patterns by manually locking in the vast majority of settings. If you’re just attending a concert, you’re not going to record anything great. If you’re working with the performers, then you’re better off with a much bigger and higher quality rig and either a tripod and zoom lens, or being up close and personal.

You may scratch your head when you see pocket cameras with fixed lenses selling for anywhere from $400 to $1,000. After all, you can get an interchangeable lens model for the same price. But these slim, premium shooters target a very specific market—photographers who already own a mirrorless camera or SLR and a bunch of lenses, but want something small as an alternative option.

If you can track one down for cheaper, last year’s Panasonic HC-V750K is essentially identical to the V770K. Excluding some rather minor features you’re probably unlikely to rely on (a new HDR video mode, a switch from mini HDMI to micro HDMI), they’re pretty much the same camera. So if you can find last year’s model for a notably lower price somewhere, then it’s probably worth picking up.

I’m about to buy the V770, but I’m not sure what memory card I should get with it, specifically the amount of memory. I’ll be using it for recording two-week holidays, after which I’ll empty the memory again. It’s probably not right to compare it to my old ’07 camera because the file size will probably be much larger with today’s higher resolution, right? So what memory card would you recommend?
The front-facing microphones of the Canon capture decent sound, but there is little stereo separation to produce a more immersive feel. These things aside, the Vixia HF R500 produces clean, attractive video that looks and sounds miles better than what you would get from a smartphone.

This option can be way more expensive (which i wouldnt be able to do now) but gives me the possibility to have better equipment for a long time. On the other hand this would not be so portable or zero portable.

Need some help to decide between an action camera, video camera, or other — I enjoy recording video of my son’s hockey games, and then producing an after season highlight video for the parents. I have been using 2 action cameras at each end of the rink, but I would like to move to a better ‘follow-the-puck’ model, as well as get the front of the goal instead of the back all the time. Many camera phones and most stand alone digital cameras store image data in flash memory cards or other removable media. Most stand-alone cameras use SD format, while a few use CompactFlash or other types. In January 2012, a faster XQD card format was announced. To the best of my knowledge, if you’re going to switch to a video camera to better follow the action, you’re going to need someone manning the thing and tracking the puck as it moves—which means you’re less able to watch the game unfold as a spectator. There might be a way if you record the entire game from a wide-angle to just zoom/crop down on the puck and follow it that way, but that’ll lead to a certain amount of quality degradation since you’re essentially blowing up a low res section of the video.
The very large sensor these backs use leads to enormous image sizes. For example, Phase One’s P45 39 MP image back creates a single TIFF image of size up to 224.6 MB, and even greater pixel counts are available. Medium format digitals such as this are geared more towards studio and portrait photography than their smaller DSLR counterparts; the ISO speed in particular tends to have a maximum of 400, versus 6400 for some DSLR cameras.
